Man crashes car into pub

A man has crashed his car into a pub in Albury, causing more than $200,000 in damage, before fleeing the scene in a taxi at the weekend.

Police say that at around 3.15am on Saturday, officers were called to the pub on the intersection of David and Wilson Street, Albury, following reports a grey Ford Fortura had crashed into poles supporting the balcony.

Police have been told the driver fled in a taxi and left the car at the scene.

Three load bearing poles were damaged as a result, causing the balcony to collapse. The damage is estimated to be in excess of $200,000.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 24-year-old man at Albury Police Station about 10.45pm on Saturday morning.

He was charged with unlicensed driver – resident for more than three months, negligent driving not occasioning grievous bodily harm and not give particulars to owner of damaged property.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear in Albury Local Court on December 21.
