Charges have been laid after an elderly man was seriously assaulted in Griffith, NSW, at the weekend.
Police say that at about 6.40pm on Saturday, an 80-year-old man was walking east along Yambil Street when he was confronted by a younger man.
The younger man allegedly assaulted the older man, causing him to fall to the ground where the assault continued. A number of witnesses intervened, and the younger man ran away.
The injured man was treated at the scene before being taken to Griffith Base Hospital suffering a number of facial fractures. He was airlifted to Canberra Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.
Officers from Murrumbidgee Police District attended and commenced inquiries into the assault.
Following extensive inquiries and a public appeal for information, detectives attended a home in Griffith and arrested a 43-year-old man about 3pm yesterday.
The man was taken to Griffith Police Station and charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He was refused bail and is due to appear in Griffith Local Court today.
