Man charged over scrub fires

WA Police have charged a 35-year-old man over a series of scrub fires that occurred in Hamersley and Balcatta on January 25th.

In a statement, Strike Force Vulcan said that between 8pm and 8.30pm, the man set fire to bushland as he rode his bicycle along the bike path beside Reid Highway, between Erindale and Wanneroo Roads.

It is further alleged that he set fire to bushland on Wanneroo Road in Balcatta near the Water Corp facility.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services personnel attended and extinguished the fires before they could impact on homes, Police said.

Strike Force Vulcan officers arrested the 35-year-old Balcatta man last Wednesday and he is due to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court on 28 February charged with six counts of arson.

This offence carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment.

“Information received from members of the public is important in any investigation and the officers of Strike Force Vulcan wish to thank the community for their assistance,” WA Police said.
