Man charged over firearm incident

Bunbury Detectives have charged a 52-year-old man in relation to an incident at a residence in Margaret River on Sunday, during which shots were fired.

Police say that at 5:30pm on Sunday, St John Ambulance personnel attended a residence on McKeown Place in relation to a male person needing medical assistance. Upon arrival at the residence the attending personnel heard a firearm being discharged within the residence and retreated to safety, along with other occupants of the residence.

It’s understood the firearm was discharged several times during the incident.

Margaret River Police attended the scene and established a cordon around the residence, evacuating residents from 14 nearby houses.

Additional police units from the South West District and specialist officers from the Tactical Response Group were deployed to the scene.

After several hours of negotiation, the man was taken into custody without further incident.

Yesterday, Bunbury Detectives charged the 52-year-old Margaret River man with endanger life, health or safety of a person; and unlicensed person possess firearm/ammunition.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in the Bunbury Magistrates Court today.
