Man charged over crime spree

A man has been charged with a raft of offences targeting older residents across several districts in Cannington.

Regional Investigations Unit detectives with the assistance of Cannington Detectives arrested the 23-year-old man yesterday after he crashed a car in Welshpool that he had allegedly stolen two hours earlier from a 64-year-old man in Cloverdale.

Police say the man’s crime spree took place throughout October and November 2020 in Cannington, Cloverdale, East Victoria Park, South Perth and Welshpool.

In another incident, police allege the man entered the South Perth home of a man in his 90s around 1.30am on November 2, stealing the victim’s phone, wallet and Mercedes Benz station wagon.

A 23-year-old man from Kewdale has been charged with two counts of Steal Motor Vehicle; Steal Motor Vehicle and Drive Recklessly; Driver of a Vehicle Failed to Comply with a Direction to Stop (Circumstances of Aggravation); Reckless Driving to Escape Pursuit by Police; No Authority to Drive; Driver Fail to Stop (Property Damage); Give False Personal Details to Police; Assault Occasioning Bodily Harm; Stealing; nine counts of Gains Benefit by Fraud; and two counts of Breach of Bail.

He is due to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court today.
