Man charged over assault, robbery of 83-year-old man

A man will face court today, charged over the alleged assault and carjacking of an 83-year-old man on the state’s South Coast last week.

Police allege that just after 2.20pm on Tuesday, July 20, emergency services were called to a carpark on Vulcan Street, Moruya, following reports of an assault on an elderly man.

“Police have been told an 83-year-old man was in the carpark when he was approached by an unknown man allegedly who knocked him to the ground and stole his car keys, before fleeing the scene in the man’s vehicle,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“The elderly man was treated at the scene for knee and arm injuries, before being taken to Moruya Hospital in a stable condition; he has since been released.”

Detectives attended a home on Judith Anderson Drive, Doonside, and located a man hiding under a bed, just after 3pm yesterday. The 25-year-old was arrested and taken to Blacktown Police Station, where he was charged with aggravated robbery.

The man was refused bail to appear in Blacktown Local Court today.

The elderly man’s vehicle has since been recovered from a shopping centre carpark in Blacktown, along with his car keys and phone.
