Man charged over assault of 60-year-old security guard

Sunshine Coast detectives have charged a man over an armed robbery incident in which a 60-year-old security guard was assaulted at Nambour yesterday.

Police say that at around 2.30pm yesterday, a man entered a Mill Lane store and stole several bottles of alcohol.

“A security officer was alerted to the incident and located the man in a nearby carpark,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

“The man allegedly produced an edged weapon, threatened the 60-year-old security officer and ran off.

“Members of the community led the officer to a nearby park where the man allegedly ran at the officer, knocking him of his feet.”

Police say the man repeatedly kicked the security officer until he was chased off by members of the public.

Police located the man a short time later and took him into custody.

The Kulangoor man was denied police bail and is due to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court today.

The security guard sustained minor injuries in the incident.
