Man, 88 attacked in his bed

An 88-year-old man has been attacked in his bed during a violent break-in at Ermington last night.

Police say that at about 9.45pm on Wednesday night, the elderly man was asleep inside his Fyall Street home when he was woken by a sound coming from his room.

As he called for his friend, a 54-year-old woman who was staying with him, he was set upon by a male intruder. Police say he was punched several times in the face before the woman entered the room after hearing noises.

The intruder then punched the woman in the face and knocked her unconscious before running from the location.

Officers from Cumberland Police Area Command attended and established a crime scene. The two occupants were treated at the home before being taken to Ryde Hospital where they are both being treated for minor injuries.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.
