Man, 77, drowns after boat crashes into rocks

A 77-year-old Windsor Gardens man has died after falling from a boat in waters off Outer Harbor last night.

Police say an alarm was raised just after 6.15pm on Thursday, when a 15ft fibreglass boat suffered engine trouble and crashed into rocks at the southern Outer Harbor breakwater with both occupants on board falling into the water.

“The Police Helicopter (PolAir) made it’s way to the area, spotting two men in the water after the boat sunk,” SA Police said in a statement.

“One man was winched to safety onboard PolAir, but sadly the second man was found to be unresponsive and his body was recovered by Police Water Operations members onboard the police boat, a short time later.”

The injured man a 66-year-old from Smithfield Plains was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with chest injuries which were not considered life threatening.
