Construction workers on a residential building site in Kiama, south of Wollongong, have had a near-death experience today after a crane fell onto the structure they were working on.

Six workers were forced to flee from the roof of the Kiama Downs home as the boom of the crane collapsed across the full length of the building just after 10am.

The crane had reportedly been attempting to lift building materials onto the roof when the incident occurred.

Emergency services were called but incredibly only one person – the crane driver – sustained injuries.

The driver jumped from the crane’s cabin as it tipped over, fracturing his ankle as he did so.

“Any accident of this nature involving such a big machine is always very concerning for crews arriving on scene,” NSW Ambulance Inspector Nathan O’Brien told 9News.
