Queensland Police Service has recognised the distinguished service of Police Dog (PD) Gator, who was officially piped out of service this week following a remarkable career protecting the public.
PD Gator graduated from the QPS Police Academy on 16 November 2018, and went on to serve with the Moreton Dog Squad under the dedicated partnership of his handler, Senior Constable Tim Leybourne.
Across his distinguished career, PD Gator displayed unmatched skill, determination, and drive, Queensland Police said in a statement.
He completed 601 tracking deployments, contributing to locating 317 people and 92 property articles, and supporting 135 containment deployments, cementing his reputation as one of the squad’s most capable and dependable dogs.
His work extended beyond the Moreton region, including a notable deployment to Cairns, where he tracked five people who were arrested after an allegedly stolen vehicle was intercepted using a tyre deflation device on Des Chalmers Drive in October.
PD Gators handler, Senior Constable Tim Leybourne, reflected on the career of his companion, saying PD Gator was a loyal partner and a well-respected member of the QPS Dog Squad.
“His calm presence, strength, and reliability were invaluable in high-pressure operations, and his work directly contributed to community safety and justice,” Senior Constable Leybourne said.
“Gator has been an extraordinary partner and a fierce protector.”
Moreton Police District Chief Inspector Julia Cook attended this week’s piping out ceremony and paid tribute to the pair’s dedication.
“PD Gator and Senior Constable Leybourne’s commitment, dedication and bravery have supported countless investigations and kept our communities safe,” she said.
“Their service is something the QPS is immensely proud of, and we wish PD Gator a long and happy retirement.”
Now officially retired, Gator is settling comfortably into family life – enjoying the backyard, keeping a watchful eye over his young family and making the most of his well-earned downtime. When he’s not snoozing, he’s happiest chasing a ball or playing tug-of-war.
PD Gator was recently awarded the Queensland Police Canine Service Medallion at a Moreton District honours ceremony, recognising his significant contribution to policing Queensland.
His retirement marks not only the end of an outstanding career but also serves as a reminder of the vital role police dogs play in community safety in Queensland.
