Logan prepares for citizenship milestone

More than 100 City of Logan residents will become Australian citizens on the 20th anniversary of Australian Citizenship Day next week.

Mayor Darren Power said Logan City Council proudly hosted citizenship ceremonies throughout the year, and the upcoming one on Friday, September 17, would be a momentous occasion.

“Australian Citizenship Day was first celebrated in 2001 and the day is an opportunity for everyone to celebrate our democratic values and think about what unites us as Australians,” Mayor Power said.

“We will have 114 people from 39 countries make the Australian citizenship pledge at Beenleigh, and I can’t wait to celebrate that special moment with them.”

Similar ceremonies will be held in other communities across the nation.

“The City of Logan is one of the most culturally diverse regions in Australia,” Mayor Power said.

“We’re home to people from 217 different cultural backgrounds who speak more than 50 languages.

“Whether we’re citizens by birth or choice, let’s come together as a nation to honour what’s great about Australia and being Australian.”
