Kempsey man charged with gun offences

A 54-year-old man has appeared in court today charged with multiple firearm offences on the Mid North Coast.

Police say that just before 7pm on Wednesday, officers from Mid North Coast Police District were called to Gordon Nixon Avenue, West Kempsey, following reports that gun shots had been fired.

Police were told a man allegedly discharged a firearm into the air at the address, before leaving the scene in a vehicle.

The occupants at the home were not injured during the incident.

A crime scene was established and examined by forensic officers.

Following inquiries, the 54-year-old man was arrested on Elbow Street, West Kempsey, at noon today.

He was taken to Kempsey Police Station and police conducted a search of his vehicle. Inside, they located ammunition, a baseball bat, a baton and a knife.

The South Kempsey man was charged with possess loaded firearm public place, fire firearm in or near public place, fire firearm manner likely injure persons/property, possess unregistered firearm in public place, possess unauthorised firearm, possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority, and stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (domestic).

He was refused bail to appear in Port Macquarie Local Court today.
