Icy swim for two Illawarra men

Two men have been rescued after spending at least two hours in icy waters in the Illawarra region.

Police say that at about 5.50pm yesterday, emergency services were called to water off Purry Burry Point, Primbee, following reports a boat had capsized.

Police were told two men – aged 44 and 60 – had been fishing when their vessel overturned two hours earlier, throwing them into the water.

The men remained in the water until a member of the public contacted police.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District, assisted by the Marine Area Command and NSW Ambulance paramedics, attended and retrieved the men from the water.

They were both treated at the scene, before the older man was airlifted to Wollongong Hospital.

Their conditions are not reported to be life-threatening.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report crime via NSW Police social media pages.
