Former Australian Governor-General, Michael Jeffery has died aged 83 after a lifetime of service to his country.
On a statement today, current Governor-General David Hurley said the nation was thankful for Major-General Jeffery’s service to Australia in a number of roles.
“He was, by every measure, a great Australian,” he said.
“Throughout his career – in its many iterations – he worked tirelessly, put others ahead of himself and brought immense intellect, work ethic and commitment to everything he did. Unfailingly polite, he was, quite simply, a gentleman.”
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Major-General Jeffery would be remembered as a brave soldier, a dedicated Governor of Western Australia and Governor-General, and a passionate defender of the causes he believed in.
“Major-General Jeffery left an impressive legacy. He will be remembered both for his many achievements, and as a man of faith, integrity, decency and warmth,” Mr Morrison said.
“Major General Jeffery was a great Australian who served Australia throughout his adult life. He was a remarkable man who I am proud to call a friend.”
“On behalf of the Australian people, I express my deep gratitude for one of Australia’s finest leaders and most devoted servants.
“Jenny and I offer our heartfelt condolences to his beloved wife Marlena, to their children and extended family.”
Major-General Jeffery left his home in Perth to attend the Royal Military College Duntroon in Canberra at the age of 16 and went on to serve in Malaya, Papua New Guinea and Borneo.
He received the Military Cross during his tour in Vietnam and went on to command the Special Air Service Regiment.
He served as Western Australia Governor between 1993 and 2000 and as Governor-General from 2003 to 2008.
In retirement, he was Australia’s first National Soils Advocate.
Major General Jeffery is survived by his wife Marlena Kerr, their three sons and daughter, and seven grandchildren.
