A 75-year-old man has been charged following a high-speed police pursuit in the Lake Illawarra region yesterday.
Police say that at around 9.20pm last night, officers from Lake Illawarra Highway Patrol were travelling north on the Princes Highway at Albion Park Rail, when they say the driver of a Ford Falcon allegedly overtook them at speed.
Officers will allege the driver, a 75-year-old man, was travelling about 120km/h in a signposted 80km/h area.
“Officers attempted to stop the driver before he allegedly accelerated away from them, and a pursuit was initiated,” NSW Police said in a statement.
“The driver allegedly reached speeds of up to 180km/h in a 100km/h zone before he stopped a short time later at the Five Islands Road overpass.”
He was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he was charged with police pursuit, and exceed speed limit by more than 45km/h.
The Eastwood man was also charged with not comply with noticed direction re s 7/8/9 – COVID-19, for allegedly being outside his LGA without a permitted excuse.
His licence was also suspended. He was granted bail to appear before Kiama Local Court on 4 November.
