Police have charged a 49-year-old man after his dog died after being left in a car for several hours in Sydney’s south west.

Police say a member of the public called police after seeing the dog in distress in a vehicle parked in a driveway on Gibson Avenue, Padstow, about 10am on Monday.

“Officers from Bankstown Highway Patrol attended and located the parked Toyota sedan. Shortly after arriving, the owner, a 49-year-old man, returned to the vehicle and spoke with officers,” NSW Police said in a statement.

The five-year-old Rottweiler was taken to a local vet, where sadly she was declared deceased.

“Following inquiries, the man was issued with a Court Attendance Notice for commit an act of aggravated cruelty upon an animal, leave vehicle leave engine on, and not remove ignition key (vehicle unattended).”

The Bexley man is due to appear at Bankstown Local Court on January 14 next year.

“Motorists are reminded it is never okay to leave children, the elderly, or pets unattended in a car – even with the air conditioning running,” NSW Police said.
