The Bureau of Meteorology is continuing to monitor category one Tropical Cyclone Tiffany as it moves west across the Cape York Peninsula.
The cyclone made landfall about 90km southeast of Coen around 2pm this afternoon.
As it crosses the Cape York Peninsula, damaging to locally destructive winds between 90 and 125 kilometres per hour and heavy rain will impact far north Queensland communities, the Bureau says.
A Flood Watch has been issued for Cape York Peninsula with possible localised rainfall totals of up to 250 millimetres possible.
The cyclone is expected to weaken slightly as it moves over land to the west, reaching the Gulf of Carpentaria on Tuesday morning.
A Tropical Cyclone Watch has been issued for the Northern Territory, with Tiffany forecast to reinforce while crossing the Gulf of Carpentaria and make landfall along the Roper Groote Coast around Wednesday.
A Flood Watch will be issued for areas of the Northern Territory later today.
Senior Meteorologist, Dean Narramore said the Bureau would continue to monitor Tropical Cyclone Tiffany and provide updates as it progresses across the Cape and into the Gulf.
“Far north Queensland is experiencing the power of Tropical Cyclone Tiffany, and these impacts will be felt for the next day or so throughout north Queensland and then into the Northern Territory”‘ Mr Narramore said.
“These tropical systems intensify quickly and can shift direction very quickly as they develop, so the Bureau will be updating our warnings and advice to the community and our emergency services colleagues across Queensland and Northern Territory.”
