A police investigation is underway after multiple cyclists collided with a police motorcyclist during an event in the state’s Far North this morning.
Police say that at around 7.20am, emergency services were called to Eviron Road, Eviron, about 10km north east of Murwillumbah, following reports multiple cyclists had been injured during a cycling event.
“Officers from Tweed/Byron Police District attended and were told a group of cyclists collided with a police motorcyclist who was conducting traffic duties for the event,” NSW Police said in a statement today.
“NSW Ambulance paramedics treated nine cyclists and the officer at the scene.”
All 10 cyclists were taken to hospitals in Tweed Heads, Gold Coast and Murwillumbah with non-life-threatening injuries.
“Six of the cyclists have been treated on scene by NSW paramedics and taken by road ambulances to Murwillumbah and Tweed Hospitals with various injuries including fractures.”
“A seventh cyclist, a male age unknown, is currently being treated by the Helicopter Critical Care Medical Team and is being placed in a medically induced coma suffering multiple injuries including a head injury,” a Westpac Rescue Helicopter spokesperson said this morning.
“The patient will shortly be flown to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.”
