Cyclist dies in ute collision

A 52-year-old cyclist has died in hospital after being struck by a ute near Wollongong earlier this week.

Police say that just before 7am on Tuesday, emergency services responded to reports a bicyclist had been hit by a vehicle on Springhill Road at Coniston.

Officers from Wollongong Police District were told a man was riding a bicycle on Springhill Road near the intersection of Keira St, Coniston, when he was struck by a white Holden Rodeo ute.

The rider suffered serious head and chest injuries and was treated at the scene by New South Wales Ambulance Paramedics before being airlifted to St George Hospital in a critical condition.

The male driver of the utility was arrested and taken to Wollongong Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

Sadly, the cyclist died at St George Hospital yesterday afternoon

Officers from Wollongong Police District along with the Traffic and Highway Patrol have commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident and are appealing to anyone who saw the crash on Springhill Road or has dash-cam footage, to contact police.

Police will prepare a report into the man’s death for the information of the Coroner.
