Council to remove 62 trees from Rockhampton cemetery

Rockhampton Regional Council will remove 62 trees at the North Rockhampton Cemetery this month as a safety measure as it undertakes remediation works on the site.

Communities and Heritage Councillor, Drew Wickerson said the works were essential to ensure the safety of the staff and public.

“This is a beautiful area of the North Rockhampton Cemetery and we want to ensure the serenity remains, however the trees pose a safety risk to the community,” Cr Wickerson said.

“The trees have succumbed to disease, which has made them very brittle. They pose a significant risk to staff and the public, particularly in storm season.

“The contractor will be onsite over the next two weeks in preparation for the remediation and removal works. Works are expected to begin later this month and will take three to four months to complete.”

He said contractors would endeavour to be respectful of the gravesites and be mindful of those attending the cemetery.

“Any graves impacted by tree roots will be made safe.”

“On days when funeral services are booked, the contractor will work elsewhere to ensure mourners are not disrupted.

“Once the trees are removed, the main boulevard will remain without landscaping for a few months.”

Councillor Wickerson said the final landscaping design was currently underway for the boulevard which will include new plantings.

“The design will encompass the history of the cemetery and ensure shade for the area,” he said.

“The landscaping design and call for tender are scheduled to be completed in the next six months, with the full front entry works anticipated to be completed in 2023/2024.”

Divisional Councillor, Shane Latcham said the facility holds a special place in the heart of the community and sees large numbers of visitors.

“Ensuring the safety of our visitors is one of our priorities,” Cr Latcham said.

“I am really looking forward to seeing the final design and landscaping plans.

“Although the main boulevard will remain without landscaping for a few months, it will be worth the wait.

“It will be great to see this much-needed upgrade come to fruition.

“I am confident the community will be happy to see the new look boulevard that captures the history and sentiment of the cemetery.

“If you have any concerns, please reach out to Council on 07 4932 9000.”
