This is what it looks like when a coward attacks an 88-year-old man in his bed late at night.
The brave but shaken victim, suffering multiple facial injuries and heavy bruising, returned to his home today after receiving treatment in hospital for his injuries.
The elderly Ermington man was attacked in his bed during a violent break-in at Ermington on Wednesday night.
Police say that at about 9.45pm, the elderly man was asleep inside his Fyall Street home when he was woken by a sound coming from his room.
As he called for his friend, a 54-year-old woman who was staying with him, he was set upon by a male intruder. Police say he was punched several times in the face before the woman entered the room after hearing noises.
“I never expected [this] to happen in my 88 years,” he told Nine News as he arrived home from hospital.
“He was waiting. My room was dark.”
The intruder – who was reportedly wearing a balaclava – then punched the woman in the face and knocked her unconscious before running from the location.
Officers from Cumberland Police Area Command attended and established a crime scene. The two occupants were treated at the home before being taken to Ryde Hospital where they are both being treated for minor injuries.
Police are urging anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area to come forward.
The offender was reportedly wearing a t-shirt with a red motif on the front.
