Brave teen tackles would-be burglar

A brave teenager has tackled and detained a would-be female burglar in her 40s in St Kilda overnight.

Investigators have been told a 19-year-old woman woke to hear movement in her Charnwood Crescent residence about 11.50pm.

“She initially thought it was one of her dogs moving, but when she heard the dog growl she decided to investigate further,” Victoria Police said in a statement this morning.

“She got out of bed and went to her lounge room where she was confronted by a woman.

“The victim attempted to call police but as she did so the woman attempted to flee the premises by smashing a window on the front door.

“This was unsuccessful and the woman then made a run for the back door.”

Police say the teenager then grabbed the woman and a scuffle ensued.

“As the scuffle went on the victim managed to grab the offender around the legs, slowing her down,” police said.

“Eventually the offender managed to free herself and make her way outside where she was duly arrested by arriving police.”

A 43-year-old woman from Footscray is currently in custody and assisting police with their enquires.
