Bega Valley set for Seniors Festival

Bega Valley Shire Library is set to host a series of events to celebrate NSW Seniors Festival this year.

Council Library Officer, Kerryn Wood said the Shire’s library staff were excited to offer a variety of fun, informative and specially tailored programs to Bega Valley senior citizens during the 2023 Seniors Festival (1 to 12 February).

Bega Library will host the launch of a new book published by the Bega Valley Historical and South Coast History societies, Fascinating Bega: The Anatomy Of A Town, 1851-2023, on Friday 10 February at 11am.

The popular Words and Music program will also be held at Eden Library on Friday 10 February and an Introduction to Saltwater Fly-tying workshop will be held at Bermagui Library on Saturday 11 February.

“The Words and Music event brings people together to share discussion on a specially selected book, which is followed by morning tea and live music,” Ms Wood said.

“The fly-tying session is perfect for saltwater fishing enthusiasts or first-timers wanting to learn the art of fly tying. No experience is necessary and all materials are supplied.”

Eden Library will run The Art of Imperfection, a workshop exploring ways of letting go of perfectionism through the concept of wabi-sabi.

“Wabi-sabi is the Japanese concept of searching for the beauty in imperfection and accepting the more natural cycle of life. It reminds us that all things, including us and life itself, are impermanent, incomplete and imperfect,” Ms Wood said.

Regular programs will continue across the libraries and include Tech Help, Crafternoons, Yarn and Stitch and Learn to Knit and Crochet.

“Tech Help at Bega Library offers a free 30-minute session with one of the library’s more tech savvy seniors to help navigate the everchanging aspects of the digital world and will be held from 11am to 1pm on Wednesday 1 and 8 February,” Ms Wood said.

“Crafternoons are also held at the Bega Library from 2pm to 4pm on Wednesday 1 and 8 February, where you bring your craft projects and have a leisurely chat and a cuppa while discussing your craft or learn new things from others.

“Tura Marrang Library hosts Yarn and Stitch each month and in February is offering a special extension program, Learn to Knit and Crochet, on Saturday 18 February.”

Book online for the events or call the library on (02) 6499 2127.

NOTE: Seniors looking for assistance in getting to these events should look into applying for the 2023 NSW Regional Seniors Travel Card, a $250 pre-paid card for fuel and public transport.

These cards are available from Service NSW offices in Bega and Eden.

A Service NSW Customer Care Specialist will also be at the Tura Marrang Library on Friday 3 February from 10am to 3pm. Remember to bring your concession cards and ID.
