83-year-old dies in light plane crash

An 83-year-old man has died and another injured as a result of a light plane crash at Ball Bay, near Mackay, this morning.

“Initial invesitgations indicate about 8am, a small private plane crashed on the beach near Ward Esplanade,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

Police and emergency services responded and the pilot, a 65-year-old Haliday Bay man, was airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The passenger, an 83-year-old Kuttabul man, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“The Forensic Crash Unit will assist the Australian Transport Safety Bureau with investigations and police will prepare a report for the coroner.”

“Anyone with information is urged to come forward,” Police said.
