79-year-old cyclist dies in hospital

A 79-year-old man has died following a crash between a truck and a bicycle near the border of NSW and Victoria earlier this month.

Police say that at around 10.30am on Wednesday, December 8, emergency services were called to Thyra Road, near the corner of Ham Road, Moama – about 10km north of Echuca, Victoria – following reports a cyclist had been hit by a Volvo truck.

“The cyclist – a 79-year-old man – was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne in a critical condition,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“Officers attached to the Traffic & Highway Patrol Command and the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit attended and established a crime scene.

“They have been advised the man died in hospital last night.”

Police say that on the day of the crash, the driver of the truck – a 53-year-old Melbourne man – was taken to Deniliquin Hospital for mandatory testing, before being arrested and taken to Deniliquin Police Station, where he was charged with dangerous driving occasion grievous bodily harm and negligent driving (occasion grievous bodily harm). His driver’s licence was also suspended.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Deniliquin Local Court on Tuesday 8 February 2022.
