72-year-old escapes injury in fatal crash

A 72-year-old man was lucky to escape uninjured after a fatal multi-vehicle crash south of Cairns this morning.

Police say a 45-year-old Mount Sheridan woman died in the crash that occurred just before 8am today.

They say a silver Toyota sedan was travelling south on the Bruce Highway at Edmonton when reports suggest the car veered into the path of an oncoming semi-trailer travelling in the opposite direction.

A second car, which was travelling behind the silver Toyota, also collided into the car.

The driver and sole occupant of the silver Toyota died at the scene. The truck driver, a 46-year-old man, and driver of the other car, a 72-year-old man, were not physically injured.

Officers from the Forensic Crash Unit are continuing investigations.
