125 arrested in Townsville crime swoop

Police in Townsville have arrested 125 people on almost 500 charges as part of an operation targeting repeat offenders over the school holidays.

Officers arrested 102 adults and 23 juveniles in Townsville during Operation Sierra Silhouette which launched on Saturday, September 19.

Police say a combined total of 478 charges were laid for a range of offences including car theft, burglary, drugs and weapons offences and wilful damage.

Extra officers from the State Flying Squad have joined local police as part of the operation, boosting police presence across the district for the two-week period.

On the final weekend, officers arrested a 35-year-old man at Rasmussen where they allegedly located dangerous drugs and a taser.

He has since been charged with 11 offences including drug trafficking and weapons-related offences and has been remanded in custody to reappear in Townsville Magistrates Court on November 6.

Crime prevention officers also conducted information stalls at five public events and delivered crime prevention information to 2,500 residential properties through letterbox drops in key areas as part of the operation.
