NSW Seniors Festival: More Than Just a Meal at the Expo

As the NSW Seniors Festival gets underway, Meals on Wheels is highlighting its  long-standing commitment to supporting independence and health across the state.  With a history spanning nearly 70 years, the service remains a cornerstone of  community care for over 14,000 volunteers delivering 4.5 million meals annually.

Supporting Independence at Home

Meals on Wheels is designed to help older Australians, people with a disability, and  their carers remain in their own homes longer. By providing nutritionally balanced  meals, the service directly reduces the risk of malnutrition and associated health  issues, such as falls.

Key Service Features:

  • No Means Testing: Accessible to those who need support, regardless of  income.
  • Specialised Nutrition: Catering for specific dietary requirements (e.g.,  gluten-free) and the cultural needs of CALD (Culturally and Linguistically  Diverse) clients.
  • Social Connection: For many, a volunteer’s visit is their primary daily social  contact, reducing isolation and providing a vital wellbeing check.
  • Statewide Presence: Over 130 local branches operating across NSW.

A Legacy of Care

Originally founded in Britain during WWII, the service launched in Australia in 1953.  The NSW journey began in 1957 at Sydney Town Hall, where volunteers prepared  150 meals for two shillings each. Today, the organisation has evolved into a  sophisticated network that balances modern nutritional standards with the traditional  “friendly visit.”
