Eating well can help you in more ways than you think

By Julianna Stewart

Cooking dinner every night of the week can sometimes feel like a chore. As we get older, it’s easy to lose enthusiasm for preparing meals and take the easy option, which sometimes means grabbing snacks or eating foods which have low nutritional value – like two-minute noodles!

You may also notice that your stomach is more sensitive to different foods which can cause you to eat blander meals and not the wide variety of foods needed to stay healthy.

On top of this, you might be feeling a little nervous about shopping during the current surge of COVID-19 cases, resulting in having less fresh fruit and vegetables on hand.

It’s common for seniors to have poor appetites, which in turn leads to eating less, resulting in tiredness, and not feeling hungry. This cycle can lead to a weakened immune system, constipation, more brittle bones, and an acceleration of vision loss in eye conditions such as glaucoma or macular degeneration.

Good nutrition means eating a well-balanced diet to meet daily requirements for the macro/micro nutrients, vitamins and minerals from our food to maintain optimum energy levels and overall health and wellbeing.

It’s easy to get off track and sometimes it just takes a little bit of support  to get us back onto a path of eating well and feeling better.

integratedliving Australia has accredited practicing dieticians who can assist you in your home or work with you via our Telehealth program to assess your nutritional needs and tailor a nutritional care plan just for you.

Dietician, Anna Bampton, said she loves being able to support seniors to meet their optimal health goals through good nutrition and healthy eating.

“We understand the science behind nutrition and can provide expert medical nutrition therapy and food advice, targeting individual dietary needs and food preferences to promote both physical and mental health, independence and to prevent or manage different health conditions,” she said.

“We will support you to optimise your nutrition, health and wellbeing, whilst building a healthy relationship with food to encourage enjoyment at mealtimes.”

integratedliving Australia provides a wide range of services to help seniors live independently in their own homes for as long as possible. The aged care provider has recently partnered with Lite n’ Easy to offer a new and improved meal delivery service to seniors who have been assessed via My Aged Care and are receiving funding under a Commonwealth Home Support Program.

“These packaged meals can be delivered to your door and offer the convenience of a wide range of ready-to-eat meals,” said Ms Bampton.

integratedliving Australia’s meal service takes the hassle out of mealtimes, with no preparation, chopping, or messy clean ups required!  This ensures you’re eating well, getting the nutrients you need and ensuring you have energy for the day.

For those with lighter appetites, Lite n’ Easy offers the MyChoice selection with smaller portion sizes but the same nutritionally compliant meals. This means not only are you getting the required energy and nutrients from your meals, but there is less waste.
