Police release NSW travellers from quarantine following airport bungle

South Australia Police have today informed 160 travellers that they can leave self-quarantine immediately, after an airport bungle yesterday saw more than 500 detained prior to the state’s border closure to NSW residents.

Approximately 550 people entered South Australia from NSW yesterday and were directed to self-quarantine for 14 days, despite arriving hours prior to the midnight border closure.

“Some of those people were required to self-quarantine for 14 days due to the requirements of Cross Border Travel Direction No. 24,” South Australia Police said in a statement.

“Today SA Police is endeavouring to contact all 550 people by telephone to reassess their status against yesterday’s quarantine requirement.”

By 4pm today, SA Police said approximately 180 people had been contacted, with 160 of those advised they could leave quarantine.

All are still required to submit to a COVID-19 test on Day 1, Day 5 and Day 12 whether in quarantine or not.

“Police will continue to make the calls into the evening and resume first thing in the morning to reach all those affected,” SA Police said.

“Police estimate that yesterday approximately 100 people chose not to enter South Australia when advised they would need to self-quarantine.”
