Face masks return for Canberrans

Masks will return to the faces of Canberrans from midnight tonight, as the Territory sees an upsurge in COVID cases.

Restrictions for visitors to aged care homes in Canberra have also changed, ACT Health confirmed today.

Aged care residents will now be restricted to five visitors per day, with a maximum of five visitors at any one time.

There will be no daily limit on the number of visitors for end-of-life visits, the health authority said.

Masks will be mandatory for staff and visitors in aged care settings.

Sixteen new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the ACT today. There are currently a total of 124 active cases in Canberra – 62 of which are the Omicron variant.

Just three people are hospitalised and none require ventilation, ACT Health said.

From midnight, face masks will be mandatory for indoor workplaces, on public transport, in hospitality venues, and in aged care venues.

Patrons in hospitality venues will be permitted to remove their masks while seated and while eating or drinking.
