Brisbane elective surgeries resume following flu, COVID surge

Elective surgeries at hospitals across Brisbane’s Metro North Health Service re-commenced at noon today following a 48-hour hiatus to free up pressure on hospitals dealing with high numbers of flu and COVID patients.

The Health Service paused category 2 and 3 elective surgeries, with 29 surgeries rescheduled during the past two days to allow for resources to focus on delivering care to patients in Emergency Departments during the surge, while category 1 surgeries were unaffected.

“I want to thank the nurses, staff and clinicians who worked tirelessly throughout this period,” said Minister for Health and Ambulance Services, Tim Nicholls

“We are delivering more transparency into our hospitals than ever before, just as we promised, as we deliver a fresh start for Queensland.

“It will take time to heal the Queensland Health Crisis but already we’re seeing ambulance ramping trending downward and our Surgery Connect Surge has delivered the biggest drop in the surgery waitlist in a decade,” said the Minister.
