Voting opens for best Brisbane street artwork

Brisbane residents can now vote for their favourite designs from the annual Artforce competition, which sees traffic signal boxes transformed into vibrant street artwork.

Brisbane Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner says this year’s 84 entries pushed creativity to new levels, with designs featuring colourful patterns inspired by local suburbs, to a kangaroo caricature abseiling down the Kangaroo Point Cliffs.

Voting for the 2024 People’s Choice award is now open and will close on 28 February.

“I have been so impressed by the calibre of work this year, which turned our blank electrical boxes into artworks the community can be proud of,” said Lord Mayor Schrinner.

“Months of planning and weeks of painting have gone into these projects, so make sure you get out, see them with your own eyes and show your appreciation by voting for your favourite.

“Artforce is a great way for amateur artists to develop their skills through practical experience, while protecting street infrastructure from vandalism.

“It’s another way we’re giving people more to see and do, while ensuring our suburbs are the best places to live.”

Altogether, 70 volunteers, 8 families and 11 organisations helped bring the artworks to life.

Participants were of all ages and levels of artistic experience, and included school students, members of community groups and local businesses.

Some of the artworks were hand-painted on electrical boxes, while others were applied with a vinyl wrap.

Each one was made to reflect the character, environment, culture, and history of the area it belongs to.

The People’s Choice vote is one of nine award categories recognising the competition’s most outstanding entries.

The other categories will be judged according to their artistic merit, connection to site, and connection to community.

Artforce started in 1999 to improve the appearance of electrical boxes, reduce graffiti, and support Brisbane’s emerging art community.

Since then, more than 5500 volunteers have transformed more than 2500 boxes.
