University celebrates distinguished alumni’s 100th birthday

The University of New England has congratulated one of its most distinguished alumni, Ron Vickress, who this week celebrates his 100th birthday.

In a statement, the University said Ron’s full life exemplified the power of principled action and unwavering commitment to community service.

“From his early days as a 16-year-old air raid warden during WWII to his service aboard HMAS Pirie, Ron’s journey has been one of courage and conviction. As a signalman in the Royal Australian Navy, he witnessed history unfold, present as he was at the signing of the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Harbour in 1945. Yet it was his actions after the war that truly defined his character,” UNE’s statement reads.

Ron’s connection to UNE runs deep. After completing his Bachelor of Letters in 1963, he went on to earn his Master of Education with honours and served as a respected lecturer in English and Drama from 1972 to 1985. His contributions to theatre education and performance at UNE have left an indelible mark, with his original plays, including the thought-provoking ‘Crossing’, first performed in the UNE Arts Theatre.

A recipient of the UNE Alumni Community Award and Armidale Regional Council’s Senior Citizen of the Year award, Ron’s impact extends far beyond the university gates – from establishing swimming clubs to running amateur theatre, from advocating for social justice to supporting Indigenous communities. His dedication to community service included serving as trustee of the Guyra Soldier’s Memorial Hall, where he held the distinction of being the oldest trustee of any Crown Land entity in NSW.

Ron’s life embodies the verse he often quotes: “Life is only froth and bubble/ Two things stand like stone/ Kindness in another’s trouble/ Courage in your own”. Through his roles as teacher, director, poet, writer and community leader, he is a reminder that one person’s commitment to “deeds, not words” can indeed make a lasting difference.

Happy 100th Birthday, Ron – a true exemplar of the UNE spirit. Your dedication to education, the arts and social justice has touched countless lives and is an inspiration to future generations.
