Tasty hat-trick for Boronia bakery

A bakery in Boronia, Victoria, has taken out Australia’s Best Pie award – marking a hat trick of consecutive national titles for the small pie shop’s most famous offering.

Country Cob Bakery’s ‘pepper steak pie’ was yesterday named the nation’s most delicious by the Baking Association of Australia.

“The history repeats. We have done it again. Australia’s Best Pie Champion three years in a row,” the business said on its Facebook page.

It’s the fifth time Country Cob’s $5.90 pepper beef pie has taken out the top gong, with Baking Association judges biting into 1947 different pies across 14 categories this year, including camel curry and satay crocodile offerings.

The Victorian bakery also won best plain beef pie, best vegetarian pie (curry cauliflower, lentil, chickpea), best flavour beef pie and best gourmet pie (American BBQ whiskey pork and quail egg) in the 2020 awards held at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney.

Australia’s top 10 best pies and pastries gongs also included Maleny Bakery – 2nd place for its chunky beef pie; Four Seasons Patisserie – 5th place for its Malaysian seafood pie; Bel’s Gordon Street Bakery – 6th place for its chicken cajun; and Mountain High Pies – 8th place for its lamb shiraz pie.
