State Memorial for Ron Barassi

Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews has this afternoon confirmed the offer of a state memorial to honour the extraordinary life of Ron Barassi has been accepted by his family.

“The word legend is used a lot.But nobody deserves it quite like Ron Barassi,” said Premier Andrews.

“He didn’t just play the game – he reshaped it.

“And how fitting that Friday night’s game was a cliffhanger between the Dees and the Blues.”

“The Department of Premier and Cabinet will work with Mr Barassi’s family and state memorial details will be announced in due course,” the Premier said.

Mr Barassi passed away at the weekend, aged 87.

He was a six-time premiership player for Melbourne – playing 204 senior games for the club and 50 senior games for Carlton – and four-time premiership coach.

He was also the first player to be inaugurated into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
