Police seize 50kg of drugs in roadside search

A 65-year-old man has been charged after more than 50kg of illicit drugs were allegedly seized following a police vehicle stop in the Murrumbidgee region.

Police say that at around 5.30pm on Tuesday, officers stopped a white Mitsubishi Triton dual cab ute on the Sturt Highway at Hay, after checks revealed the vehicle was unregistered.

Officers spoke with the driver, a 65-year-old man, before searching the vehicle.

During the search, police allegedly uncovered more than 30kg of methamphetamine, more than 3kg of cocaine, and almost 3kg of heroin.

“Officers also located 11kg of a brown substance, and more than 2kg of another substance believed to be prohibited drugs, which were hidden under tiles and paint,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“All items seized – including the vehicle – will undergo further analysis.”

The man was arrested and taken to Hay Police Station, where he was charged with three counts of large commercial drug supply, and drive unregistered vehicle.

He appeared at Griffith Local Court via AVL yesterday, where he was formally refused bail to reappear in the same court on July 28.
