NSW Seniors minister urges resilience – and vaccinations

NSW Minister for Seniors, Natalie Ward has written a letter to the state’s seniors, thanking them for their resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic and urging them to reach out for support if needed.

“To our Seniors, I write this message to you during a time of uncertainty as our State navigates its way through the COVID-19 pandemic,” Minister Ward’s letter begins.

“We find ourselves in unchartered waters, as we reflect on the events of our past to help us confront the turbulence we now face.

“We are so fortunate to have your experience to draw on – your combined knowledge is colossal. Together, you hold a treasure trove of wisdom.

“Your diversity also enriches us. You may be an Aboriginal Elder with a deep connection to country and teachings to share. Or someone who migrated here, bringing an array of culture and language from other lands, to share at a time when, for most, international journeys are out of sight.

“I know so many of you cannot seek comfort from loved family members in person. We all look forward to a time when that can happen again.

“Many of you have overcome some of the biggest trials in living memory: The Great Depression, the Second World War, the polio epidemic and the global financial crisis. In the face of new challenges today, we look up to you – and your strength.

“Thank you for continuing to be role models, carers, volunteers and workers.

“Whether it is a grandparent providing childcare for our essential workers or a volunteer protecting our most vulnerable. You volunteer more hours per week on average than any other age group. As a Rotarian myself, I’m particularly proud to hear of the clubs using online technology to continue humanitarian efforts. Your unwavering resilience is inspiring.”

The Minister’s letter also included a call to arms – for Seniors who are yet to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to do so.

“We know people aged over 70 are at greater risk of serious illness from COVID-19. We are deeply grateful to each and every one of you who has rolled up your sleeve to get vaccinated,” she wrote.

“That is our pathway forward, to a better future.
