Meet Izzy, the NT’s life-saving poodle

She may not have a medical degree but make no mistake, Izzy, is helping save lives.

The two-year-old non-allergenic poodle has been on call at Katherine Hospital for the past month assisting patients in their recovery and she’s not going anywhere.

Izzy is the Northern Territory’s first support and wellness dog to live permanently at a hospital – made possible through donations at Katherine Town Council’s 2022 Defence and Mayoral Ball.

“We’ve had therapy dog programs up and running for several years at Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospital,” said NT Chief Minister, Natasha Fyles.

“And I’m pleased to report Alice Springs Hospital has started receiving monthly visits from their own special four-legged friend.

“Like a dog with a bone, we’re determined to have a therapy dog in every one of our hospitals so watch this space,” the Chief Minister said.
