Congratulations to Evelyn Wilkinson who is celebrating her 100th birthday.
Born in Launceston, Tasmania, Evelyn joined the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF) in November 1941 and was based in Victoria and Tasmania as a sergeant in the accounts area.
Evelyn recalls that each morning she had to march a squad of WAAAFs to work.
Evelyn was proud of her service and advises younger serving members to always be proud of representing and serving your country.
While still serving, Evelyn married William Colvin Wilkinson in April 1943.
William was a flight lieutenant in the Royal Australian Air Force. Sadly, he passed away in 1987.
After the war, Evelyn raised her children and did voluntary work until her last child was at high school. She then studied psychology and English at Rosny College. She later became secretary for her husband’s business and was a counsellor with Lifeline.
And Evelyn’s secret to her long life? She says: ‘It’s heredity mainly. But you need to keep active – keep your body fit. Genes and physical work are the secret’.
Happy birthday Evelyn and thank you for your service. #TYFYS#OurVeterans
