Driver, 73, questioned over $3 million drug haul

Victoria Police have seized $3 million worth of illegal drugs following a vehicle intercept near Horsham last week.

Police say the Hyundai light truck was intercepted by police from Horsham Highway Patrol on the Western Highway about 7pm on Monday, January 24.

During a search of the vehicle, four large barrels of an unidentified liquid, suspected of being an illicit substance, were located.

“Forensic testing of the liquid has since identified that two barrels contained 356 litres of 1,4-butanediol, which is classified as a drug of dependence,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

It’s believed the street value of the drug is in excess of $3 million.

The remaining two barrels contained a non-illicit water-based solution, Police said.

The driver of the truck, a 73-year-old South Australian man, was interviewed by police and released pending further enquiries.

“Given the size of the seizure, the matter is now being investigated by detectives from the Victoria Police Crime Command,” Victoria Police said.

“On Saturday, warrants were executed at three properties in South Australia as part of the investigation into the seizure.”

“The warrants were executed at addresses in Hayborough and Goolwa with the assistance of South Australia Police.

“No other person has been arrested at this time and the investigation remains ongoing.

“Police are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the light truck travelling between South Australia and Victoria last week.”

It’s believed the vehicle had travelled from Adelaide before being intercepted in Horsham.

Police have also released an image of the white Hyundai light truck (pictured), with registration S244 CMX, in the hope someone is able to provide police with further details of its recent movements.
