A 90-year-old grandmother in the UK says she feels privileged to be the first person in the country vaccinated against COVID-19.
Retired British shop clerk, Margaret Keenan, who turns 91 next week received the vaccine shot last night – Australian time – in what UK health authorities have dubbed the nation’s “V-Day”.
Ms Keenan was at the front of the queue at University Hospital Coventry, one of several that are involved in the initial roll out of the vaccination program.
The second shot went to an 81-year-old Warwickshire man with a very famous name – William Shakespeare.
The pandemic has killed 1.5 million people in the UK.
“I feel so privileged to be the first person vaccinated against COVID-19,” Keenan told waiting media.
“It’s the best early birthday present I could wish for because it means I can finally look forward to spending time with my family and friends in the New Year after being on my own for most of the year.”
The UK became the world’s first western country to begin mass vaccinations after regulators gave the Pfizer vaccine the green light last week.
