Cairns Private Hospital has celebrated its 70th birthday with a party to acknowledge and thank its staff, doctors and community.
Midwife, Teresa Jones, who has worked at the hospital for 36 years, was on hand to cut the cake.
Teresa, who is one of the hospital’s longest-serving team members, has delivered hundreds of Cairns babies since she finished her training in 1985.
Cairns Private Hospital, which began its life as the Calvary Hospital in 1951, has since transformed into a large 150-bed regional hospital owned and operated by Ramsay Health Care.
CEO, Ben Tooth said the 70th birthday was an important milestone to commemorate and he wanted to use the occasion to show his appreciation to the hard work the staff had put in especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Our frontline health staff have gone above and beyond and done everything possible to ensure our community has been kept safe since the pandemic started,” Mr Tooth said.
“It’s thanks to them that Cairns Private Hospital has grown to such a large hospital which is well respected within the local community.”
Ramsay Health Care Australia CEO, Carmel Monaghan, said she had lots of fond memories of many trips to Cairns when Ramsay acquired Cairns Private Hospital, learning about the community and planning new services.
“Today the hospital has an excellent range of services, great specialists and wonderful staff. I really look forward to further expansions in Cairns and what the next 70 years will bring,” Ms Monaghan said.
