Christmas will be a little brighter for hundreds of local families, thanks to the generosity of the Cairns community.
More than 100 volunteers came together recently at Fred Moule Pavilion at the Cairns Showgrounds to pack hampers and spread a little Christmas cheer.
The 2022 Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Appeal has raised over $60,000 this year to provide 750 food hampers to families, the elderly, carers and other residents who might otherwise go without on Christmas Day.
This year’s volunteer contingent included many teenagers on school holidays who packed hampers with their friends, as well as volunteers from Rotary, HMAS Cairns, Telstra and Northern Pride.
Cairns Regional Council thanked all involved, saying the fundraising effort would not have been possible without the support of local businesses and, of course, the generosity of the community.
