Boys charged over Goulburn hospital blaze

Two boys have been charged by police over a deliberately lit fire that destroyed a former hospital building in the state’s Southern Tablelands last weekend.

The boys – aged 13 and 14 – have been dealt with under the Young Offenders Act, NSW Police said in a statement today.

“About 4.45pm on Saturday 16 October, emergency services were called to a hospital at Taralga Road, Goulburn, following reports of a building fire,” police said.

The historic building on the Kenmore Hospital site, is believed to have been built between 1897 and 1899. Up to 50 NSW Fire & Rescue and RFS crew battled the blaze. It took the firefighters around five hours to extinguish the blaze.

Sadly, the building was completely destroyed, with the damage valued at more than $500,000.

“The hospital was unoccupied at the time and no injuries were reported,” police said.

“Officers from The Hume Police District commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire. Following inquiries, two boys – aged 13 and 14 – attended Goulburn Police Station this week.”

The boys will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act for destroy property in company using fire and enter enclosed lands.
