Body of missing fisherman, 68, found

A police search for a missing 68-year-old fisherman has ended tragically with the man’s body washed ashore north of Perth today.

Police launched a search and rescue operation yesterday after a boat was seen travelling in circles about 10 kilometres off the coast near Yanchep.

WA water police approach the out-of-control vessel.

The boat’s registration details revealed the owner was a 68-year-old local fisherman. When police managed to intercept the speeding boat – executing a dangerous but effective collision with the out-of-control boat – they were surprised to find a very frightened dog on board.

Water police rescue the missing fisherman’s dog from the vessel.

Police say the man’s tinnie had suffered significant damage.

“We can’t confirm if that’s pre-existing or that’s part of the water police vessel coming into contact,” said WA Police Senior Sergeant Martin Hopkins.

Police believe the man was wearing a life jacket while onboard. Investigations into the incident are continuing.
