Beloved TV host loses cancer battle

The much-loved host of the popular US quiz show Jeopardy!, Alex Trebek, has died at his home aged 80 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

The Canadian-born Trebek revealed he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in March last year, but vowed to beat the disease.

At the time, Mr Trebek told his TV audience that he intended to fight the disease and keep working, joking that he needed to because his Jeopardy! contract ran for three more years.

His hugely popular show – that airs on weeknights on SBS Viceland – posted news of his tragic death on its Twitter page, saying he had passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends.

Mr Trebek won six Emmy Awards for outstanding game-show host and also received a Lifetime Achievement Emmy award in 2011.

Trebek is survived by his wife, Jean, and their two adult children, Emily and Matthew.
