Gather the grandkids – LEGO RELICS is coming to Coffs Harbour

The hottest tickets in town – to secure an up-close view of a series of mini-worlds built with LEGO® – are about to go on sale in Coffs Harbour.

RELICS: A New World Rises will open at the City of Coffs Harbour’s Yarrila Arts and Museum (YAM) on March 28th.

Direct from its most recent exhibition at the Australian Museum in Sydney, RELICS has wowed the major metropolitan markets and it’s a coup for YAM to secure this event.

RELICS is one of the most talked about exhibitions in Australia right now and it’s so cool to be able to bring it here to Coffs Harbour,” said Mayor, Nikki Williams.

“The significance is borne out by the fact that RELICS will be only the second ticketed exhibition at YAM since the gallery’s opening at Yarrila Place in 2023.

“The only other ticketed exhibition was the internationally renowned Sea Monsters which was in fact the first major event for YAM.”

RELICS centres on 12 vintage objects – from an automatic teller machine to a refrigerator – all of which have fallen into disuse after humans left an Earth exhausted of its natural resources.

Inside each of the vintage objects is an intricate and magical micro-society created with LEGO® by the mini figures (‘minifigs’), where the inhabitants have learned to adapt to their home.

The immersive mini-worlds are the creation of Perth duo Jackson Harvey and Alex Towler, two mates from high school who shared a childhood love of LEGO and went on to win Channel 9’s LEGO Masters in 2020.

Museum and Gallery Service Leader, Carrie Kibbler said RELICS would delight local audiences and attract visitors from across the East Coast.

“We are value-adding to the RELICS exhibition to ensure it’s a total and unique experience,” Ms Kibbler said.

“Given this exhibition will drive tourism to Coffs we have developed some outstanding stay-and-play packages at great prices.

“We are also developing a RELICS-themed augmented reality, Pokémon GO-style game on the Coffs Coast Explorer app. This is free to download and play. The mission is to catch all of the nine minifigs which are scattered around Coffs, with a little help from an avatar of Mayor Nikki.”

Those who collect all of the minifigs on their phone can bring it into YAM to earn a reward.

RELICS features intricate LEGO® brick civilisations thriving inside treasured objects from the past.

Within each relic, the LEGO® civilisation has adapted to the distinctive character of the artefact it inhabits. A vintage refrigerator becomes a cryogenic health resort, a typewriter transforms into a newspaper headquarters, and a Volkswagen Beetle houses an energy revolution – each with hundreds of hidden stories waiting to be uncovered.

  • Ticket prices – Adults $21, Kids $13 (under 3 free), Concession $15, Family Pass $55. Tickets on sale from 9 February. To book visit https://www.yamcoffs.com.au/relics.

RELICS will be at YAM from 28 March to 19 July.
