With the cost of living rising across Australia, more older Australians are making tough decisions about where to cut back, and for many, even the simple pleasure of a new book has become a luxury.
But thousands are now discovering they don’t have to give up reading at all, thanks to a well-kept secret hiding in their local library card.
There are free apps connected to public libraries, which give readers access to thousands of e-books, audiobooks and magazines – instantly and at no cost. All you need is a library card, a smartphone or tablet or computer, and a few minutes to set it up.
A growing trend among older readers
Recent figures from the Australian Library and Information Association show that the average Aussie borrows around six books a year from their local library, and digital borrowing is on the rise. Between 2018 and 2023, e-book and audiobook loans doubled, with older Australians making up a large part of that growth.
Regional Manager for Libby, Malcolm O’Brien says that as the cost of living rises, more older readers are discovering what Libby has to offer.Â
“It’s funny when people realise just how much content there is for them to access using their local library card, and it’s all free. We hear stories all the time from libraries about seniors who thought they had to keep buying books to keep up their reading, only to discover it was all available for free,” said Mr O’Brien.
Beyond the cost savings, Libby offers several features that are especially helpful for older readers, including those with arthritis, low vision or limited mobility or hearing issues.
Users can enlarge the font, adjust the screen brightness or switch to audiobooks and listen hands-free. There’s no need to carry heavy books, manage due dates or travel to the library. Borrowing is easy, and returning titles happens automatically.
“There are also options for the book to be read aloud or to increase the font size, which can really help those with hearing or vision impairment,” said Mr O’Brien.
For seniors living alone or facing mobility challenges, digital borrowing means they can get easy access to their favourite books, magazines and audiobooks. And during financially tight times, having a free, accessible way to enjoy reading can make a real difference.
